Welcome to My Journey: A Story of Resilience and Advocacy
Hello, My name is Aroosha. When I was first diagnosed with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, I didn’t realize how much my life was about to change. At the time, “fatty liver” sounded like a manageable inconvenience—something I could address without too much effort. But as my condition progressed to Liver Fibrosis stage 3, I faced a reality: I wasn’t prepared for advanced liver scarring, an uncertain future, and a deep sense of isolation.
It wasn’t just the physical symptoms—like nausea or abdominal tenderness—that challenged me; it was the emotional weight of not knowing what came next. I had no idea that millions of people around the world lived with similar conditions or that liver disease could strike anyone, even without alcohol as a factor. I felt like I was navigating this complex, often misunderstood disease on my own.
But then something shifted. I realized that my story—my fears, struggles, and small victories—could mean something to others. It would be worth it if sharing my experiences could help even one person feel less alone or empower them to take charge of their health.
This space is a reflection of that mission. It’s not just about my story; it’s about building awareness, fostering community, and sharing practical tools and insights to support others on their journey. Whether you’ve been diagnosed with NASH, are caring for someone with liver disease, or are here to learn, I hope you find connection, hope, and inspiration here.
I work with my primary care physician and specialists like gastroenterologists and hepatologists.
Good communication and empathy are vital in a healthcare provider.
I also prepare for every appointment by tracking my liver enzyme levels and listing questions.
Transitioning to a plant-based diet helped me lose weight and improve my liver health.
I focus on “mindful consumption,” ensuring that my foods support my long-term goals.
Tip: Start small if it is easier for you! Make gradual changes and find a diet you can stick with for life. Consult your doctor or a nutritionist for personalized advice.
Regular exercise, like walking, is a cornerstone of my lifestyle.
Tip: Find an activity you enjoy—this helps you stay consistent. Always consult your doctor before starting any new exercise routine.
Testing has been crucial in diagnosing and monitoring my NASH:
Blood Tests: Monitor liver enzymes (AST and ALT).
FibroScan® and Imaging: Measure liver stiffness and fibrosis stage.
Biopsies and MRIs: Provide detailed liver health insights.
I also participated in a clinical trial offering additional monitoring and care.
You are not alone. If you’ve been diagnosed with NASH or are caring for someone who has, know that support and resources are available. Start by building a strong relationship with your healthcare team, focusing on progress over perfection, and making lifestyle changes that fit your life.
